Nowhere Man
Sitting at the feet of the masters… I think there is something special about taking on a Beatles song. It’s sort of like walking on sacred ground, and I think that is especially true for a song like Nowhere Man. I remember loving this song as a child. Back then Beatles music was everywhere, and we all saw Yellow Submarine who knows how many times. I rediscovered Rubber Soul in my late 30’s, as I was actively mining my past musical tastes. Not only does it stand out for me among Beatles records for a number of reasons, but it turned out my kids loved it too. In particular my son David, who was 2 at the time, really loved Nowhere Man and would ask for me to play it. So I set out to learn it. A simple song, really, but for whatever reason it took a very long time for me to learn it well enough that I would actually sing it in front of anybody. Eventually I took it to my studio and began developing the track I have posted here. I really do love this song, not just for its beautiful melody, but for its profoundly sympathetic and clear point of view. The song’s description of the Nowhere Man is brutally honest, yet full of love. A very special song. I hope you all enjoy my take on it. Here is the song. |
